Learn How to Play Texas Holdem Poker

Betting the blinds
Most poker hands start out with a forced bet called a blind. This ensures a minimum of action for each hand. Texas Hold'em is played with two forced blinds (one forced bet made before the hole cards are dealt). The two players to the left of the dealer bet the two blinds. The small blind is bet by the first player and the big blind by the second. The big blind is always equal to the minimum table bet whereas the small blind is half.
In a betting round, each player in turn, chooses one of the following options:
Bet: Placing money in the pot
Call: Place a bet equal to the bet placed by another player in the pot.
Check: Forfeit your hand and chance of winning the pot.
Fold: Forfeit your right to act (assuming no other bet has been made).
Raise: Bet more than another player at the table.
Re-Raise: Make a higher bet on another player's raise.
First betting round - The Pre-Flop:
Once both blinds have been made, the dealer deals two cards to each player, moving around the table in a clockwise direction. These two cards are called "pocket cards" or "hole cards".
Once these players have decided whether they wish to place a bet, it is the turn of the player sitting after the big blind to start the betting round. In the first round, you cannot "check", but you can do any of the following: bet, call, raise or fold. All players must bet an equal number of chips for the game to continue.
If one of the players raises, the following player must either follow, re-raise or fold.
Second betting round - The Flop:
The dealer places three cards in the centre of the table - known as the flop. These three cards are community cards, and they can be used in combination with the two hole cards each player has in hand.
Players who remain in the game now begin their second betting round. The player, which is located to the left of the dealer initiates the betting round. He can choose one of the following options: check, bet, raise, call or fold. All players must put the same amount of chips into the pot or fold before the end of each round. The same rule applies both to the bets going forward.
Third round - The Turn:
The dealer places a fourth community card on the table, so that all players have six cards with which to make their best possible hand. A new round of betting follows.
Fourth round - The River:
The fifth and final community card is dealt on the table and a final betting round ensues.
Show of Cards:
In all, you can use five of the seven cards at your disposal. This means that each player can form the best possible five-card hand using his two hole cards and the five community cards on the table. There is no obligation to use any of your hole cards if you so wish. You can play the table if the best hand is there. The remaining players show their cards and determine the winner.
